Why We Read-Ch 3

When we read we open up a whole new universe. We expose ourselves and others to various cultures, influences, people, places and so much more. Reading is a way to connect and encounter words and concepts that we would have never been exposed to. Comprehension is the main purpose that we should develop when we read. Our backgrounds, cultures and values influence the way that we comprehend what we have read, and the way that we infer it. In my home we are active readers, reading to bring together family time and our culture. We as a culture of teachers and educators must encourage critical thinking and not push our views on our students. I hope that I can get in thirty minutes of reading and comprehension every night.

  1. We also read together as family time. I find this is the best way to compete with XBox's, TV, and toys. My kids have come to enjoy reading time. It does not matter if it is a fiction story, bible story, or a magazine. It is great because it opens up a conversation. That then leads to another conversation. I think my boys sometimes forget it was a story that has lead to our talks. Hopefully, they will remember this time together when they are older.

  2. Reading is an awesome tool for children. When children are reading they are expanding there vocabulary and really not even know it. I personally don't care to read probably because when I was little my parents just never took the time. When I found out that I was having a child from the get go in my tummy I read to my child. Silly I know but I wanted to make sure she would enjoy reading and now we buy books every week for her.

  3. I'm glad that I am in this class. I have never felt more passionate about books and the effects they can have on children. I am going to foster a love for reading in my youngest child. I think she will truly benefit from it. I also think if my older children see momma excited about reading it will change their perspective too.Life is busy, but reading opens up all kinds of avenues for a good conversation this leads to good relation- ships

  4. I totally agree with you and that is great about reading with your family. The only reading I saw around my house was my father reading the newspaper, but by being in this class, I have learned to loveee going to the library and my neice loves it to! I totally agree with everything you said.
